Cheryl A. Bachelder
CEO, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc.,
Franchisor of Popeyes® Louisiana Kitchen
Cheryl A. Bachelder is a passionate restaurant industry executive, known for her crisp strategic thinking, guest-focused operations, consistent financial performance and the development of outstanding leaders and teams. She joined Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in November 2007 after serving as an active member of the Board for a year. She brings more than 30 years of experience in brand building, operations and public-company management at companies like KFC, Domino's Pizza, RJR Nabisco, The Gillette Company and The Procter & Gamble Company.
At Popeyes, Ms. Bachelder promptly established a Road Map for Results that focused in four key areas: build the brand, run great restaurants, grow restaurant profits and ramp up new restaurant growth. This strategic framework has led to focused initiatives that have built market share, improved guest ratings by over 20 percentage points and increased restaurant margins by over 200 basis points in three years. The improvement in restaurant performance has led to the acceleration of new unit growth, both in the U.S. and international. She has delivered 4 years of results to the shareholders; meeting or exceeding expectations every year. Today Popeyes has system-wide revenues of $1.9 billion, over 2000 restaurants in 25 countries, over 300 franchisees and more than 60,000 restaurant employees.
Ms. Bachelder creates work environments where people can do their best work. She believes in a passionate, purposeful approach to work where the focus is on coaching and developing people to be leaders with competence and character. Guided by the servant leadership thinking of Robert Greenleaf, she builds highly collaborative teams with big ambitions for the enterprise, not themselves. These teams work in close partnership and alignment with franchisees to deliver exceptional marketplace results.
Ms. Bachelder has served as a member of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc.'s Board of Directors since November 2006 and also serves on the True Value Corporation Board of Directors, since 2006; the Procter & Gamble APFI Advisory Board, since 2009; as well as the Board of Directors for the National Restaurant Association, since May 2009. She has over five years of board experience, with depth in the areas of corporate governance and executive compensation. In her board role for the NRA, she has helped jump-start the expansion of ProStart, a curriculum taught in high schools in 40 states to prepare the next generation of culinary and management talent for restaurants.
Prior to serving as Popeyes CEO, Ms. Bachelder has revitalized brand performance in both retail and consumer goods companies. She was president and chief concept officer for KFC Corporation (2001-2003).
From 1995 to 2000, Ms. Bachelder served as vice president of marketing and product development for Domino's® Pizza, Inc. She was the brand architect responsible for contemporizing the restaurant chain's image and innovation which drove strong same-store sales growth for five consecutive years across 5,400 units.
Prior to her restaurant experience, Ms. Bachelder served as general manager of the LifeSavers Division of RJR Nabisco. Her early career years included brand management roles at The Gillette Company and The Procter & Gamble Company.
In 2012, Cheryl has been recognized as Leader of the Year by the Women's Foodservice Forum and received the highest industry award, the Silver Plate, for the quick service restaurant sector, presented by the International Food Manufacturer's Association.
Ms. Bachelder holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Masters of Business Administration in Finance and Marketing from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She is married to Chris Bachelder and they have three daughters, ages 25, 20 and 18.
